Kandy Esala Perahera 2016
The Kandy Esala Perahera, one of Sri Lanka’s most famous religious festivals, takes place every year in the hill-capital Kandy, in the full-moon month of Esala coinciding with July/August.One of the biggest Buddhist celebrations of the year, the annual Kandy Perahera (Esala Perahera) is a religious ceremony during which devotees pray for sufficient rains to bless the country and crop cultivation. One of Buddhism’s most sacred relics, the Sacred Tooth is taken from the Temple the Tooth and paraded through the streets as part of the Kandy Perahera. Following this, more festive events take centre stage and visitors can expect to see a lively cast of dancers, jugglers and fire-breathers milling amongst the crowds. There are more than 100 Elephants at Kandy Perahara.
The Esala is believed to be a fusion of two separate but interconnected "Peraheras" (Processions) – The Esala and Dalada. The Esala Perahera, which is thought to date back to the 3rd century BC, was a ritual enacted to request the gods for rainfall. The Dalada Perahera is believed to have begun when the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha was brought to Sri Lanka from India during the 4th century CE, eight hundred years after the passing away of Lord Buddha. According to tradition, the Tooth Relic was taken in procession to Sri Lanka by Princess Hemamala & Prince Dantha.

It’s a deeply spiritual form of combat which has its roots in di erent philosophies of nature and astrology and also has a strong connection
to music, employing rhythmic and owing movements. ‘Angampora’ means ‘unarmed combat’. Combat techniques where in weapons are used are called ‘Illangam’. ‘Maya Angam’ is a technique which involves the use of spells and incantations to confuse or bringan opponent down.
According to the Sinhalese folklore, origin of Angampora dates back to over 33,000 years It says that the ghting style had originated among the Yaksha tribe, one of the four hela -tribes which lived in Sri Lanka back then. Two ancient scripts named Varga Purnikawa and Pancha Rakkhawaliya identify nine hermits as its founders. The folklore describes Rana Ravana, a mythical warrior said to have lived 5,000 years ago, as the most feared Angam warrior of all time is worshiped as a ghting God even today.

Sri Lanka, the second best place to visit in 2016
Sri Lanka, the second best place to visit in 2016
Sri Lanka was selected as the second best place to visit in 2016. Australia pipped it to first as the best place to visit for this year. This research has done by Condé Nast Travel magazine. Condé Nast Traveler is a luxury and lifestyle travel magazine published by Condé Nast. The magazine has won 25 National Magazine Awards. This is a great news for the future of Sri Lankan tourism industry.
This magazine's Traveler writer "Katherine La Grave" had this to say about Sri Lanka in the latest report:
Sri Lanka – Long overshadowed by its Indian and Maldivian neighbors, this tropical island remains affordable, uncrowded, and relatively unexplored. Colombo, the country’s seaside capital, is undergoing a cosmopolitan upgrade, while Galle on the southwestern shore just welcomed a new luxury design hotel, Sri Lanka. If that weren’t enough, the island’s timeless ruins and endless stretches of surf beckon.
And also Conde Nast Traveler writer " Sebastian Faulks" commented:
“It seems hard for Sri Lanka to make up its mind exactly what it wants to be. There is a sense of unrealised potential. Sri Lankan men are almost invariably distinguished-looking – if you stop at a remote way station, the guy whose job is no more than to push leaves about with a besom will look like a professor of politics at Yale”
